This week I had the opportunity to catch up with one of Walker’s finest sports teams: Cross Country. They have worked extremely hard and deserve recognition as they have had an amazing season with both the varsity girls and boys teams ranked fifth in the state. They have also broken several records this year with Savannah McMillan running a record-breaking time of 19:28 at this past meet in Jesse Owens. Jodi Anne Martin also ran an outstanding time of 19:55. In order to get the full scoop about this amazing team of scholarly athletes, I sat down with senior Eli Matthews, son of coach Tamara Matthews, to learn what exactly this team is all about.
So what exactly is Cross Country?
“Cross Country is a closely knit team of high school and middle school runners who run competitively at courses across the state of Alabama in hopes of making it to the state meet on November 14.”
Do you enjoy being a part of the team and what has this experience taught you?
“I enjoy being a part of the team even though practices are challenging, and It has taught me to always put my all into everything I do and most importantly, to never give up.”
What do you enjoy most about being on the team?
“I have made several great friends on the team that will make this experience something I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
How many days are you required to practice a week in order to prepare for a meet?
“4 days a week with the team and 2 days individually”
What does a typical practice consist of?
“It differs each day: Mondays we run long distance, Tuesdays we run hills, Wednesdays we run mile repeats and focus on speed work, and Thursdays are cool downs before the meets on Saturdays.”
After interviewing Eli, I was able to get the 411 and fully understand just how amazing this team truly is, despite not being one of the most well-known sports at Walker. Coaches Tamara Matthews and Linda Runyan have worked hard to turn this group into excellent runners so be sure to attend their upcoming meet this Saturday at The Octoberfest in Cullman! That’s all for for this week- Catch ya on the flip slide homies!
