March 20, Senior Trooper Jonathan Appling spoke to the WHS student body on safe driving and the importance of avoiding distracted driving. Jonathan Appling, a 2002 Walker High School graduate, is an Alabama State Trooper who works with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to deliver powerful messages about the devastation resulting from distracted driving. Distracted driving can include anything from drinking and driving, to texting, to changing the radio. Appling stated that teen drivers are especially at a high risk for having a vehicle accident while driving. The students were encouraged to make an intentional effort to practice safe driving every time they get behind the wheel. This message was delivered at an opportune time, in the midst of spring break and prom season, when many teens are tempted to drink and drive. The message Appling delivered is sure to influence the students and make them think twice before driving distracted.
