Our teacher spot light of the week is Coach Bill Young. He went to Walker High School. He graduated from Alabama with a B.F.A and from Texas Tech with an M.F.A. I also went to UAB, Walker College. Birmingham-southern and Montevallo! I like to paint, play the guitar, and occasionally ride bicycles.
What class or classes do you teach?
-I teach Art 1 (beginning art) as a 9 week class and as an 18 week class. I also teach Advanced Art which can be taken more than once.
How long have you taught at Walker?
-This is my 16th year at Walker High school.
What made you decide to be a teacher?
-Teaching was a way for me to stay involved in the things I value education and Art.
What makes your job rewarding?
-When students get to a point where they see some value in what they are doing. I know then that it will affect them for a lifetime.
How is learning personalized in your classroom?
-With something as visual as Art, I can quickly see where a student’s strengths and weaknesses are.
What is your best moment as a teacher?
-When I’m out somewhere and I see a former student and they say something positive about the experiences they had in my class.
What is your most embarrassing moment as a teacher?
-The day I decided to show the class how to balance an umbrella on your head happened to be the same day Mr. Hobson came to visit.
