Our teacher spot light of the week is Martin Blankenship. I have been married for twelve years to my wife, Jacquline we have two children, Jackson (age8) and Kindall (age6) my hobbies are coaching my son’s athletic teams.
What class or classes do you teach?
I teach Business Finance, Business Law, Multimedia, and Marketing.
How long have you taught at Walker?
This is my 11th year at Walker High school.
What made you decide to be a teacher?
After working in retail management for two years and graduating college, I decided to become a teacher so I could have a positive impact on young people’s lives.
What makes your job rewarding?
Having the opportunity to teach young people who are motivated and especially seeing someone transition from, unmotivated to motivated over the course of their high school career.
How is learning personalized in your classroom?
I try to expose my classes to different types of learning. I know lectures and “book learning” gets old so I try to utilize a project in each chapter to break the monotony, I expose my multimedia class to new things like HTML and codecademy.
What is your best moment as a teacher?
I was able to take a student to a National conference and it was the first time he had ever been on a plane or out of the state. He was exposed to new things and it was great to give him the opportunity to see life outside of what society expected him to be and do.
What is your most embarrassing moment as a teacher?
When I danced on stage in a cheerleader outfit during a pep rally. That was self-inflicted though, as I agreed to do it.
