In cross country, the state is divided into five sections, each section consisting of about seven or eight teams. In years past, Walker has run in Florence; however, due to the recent fiasco with Cullman, the Walker Cross Country team had to change sections. In the new section, the top four contenders were Lawrence County, Hartselle, West Point, and, of course, your Walker Vikings! The girls ran very well this season and were seated third with a comfortable lead. The boys, however, were seated fourth, meaning they were one place away from state. Coaches Tamara Matthews and Linda Runyan knew that this was going to be a challenge for the boys. So, as motivation, the coaches got everyone a large sock to wear around school and while running around town to remind the runners of the challenge ahead. Finally, the day of the big race came. The Vikings pushed through the wet, muddy course, and persevered through the pain and sweat to bring home the third place trophy and punch a ticket to the state meet.
