This past Saturday, September 28th, the Walker Viking Band attended Midsouth Invitational in Gadsden. This was the biggest competition that the band will attend this marching season. The competing schools in their class were Russellville, Pell City, Fort Payne, Springville, Sardis, and Scottsboro High Schools. Each band performed in front of seven different judges; one watching the drum major, one watching the percussion, another watching colorguard, one watching danceline, and three watching separate sections of the band itself. The scoring system consists of 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s. 1 is a superior rating. There is also an award for Best In Class, which states that whichever band receives it is the best in their division. The Walker Band received all 1’s, in every category, and Best In Class. In addition, at the end of their performance, they received a standing ovation from everyone watching in the crowd. This was special because only four bands out of the many got this exhilarating experience all day. Adding on to the awards they received, Mr. Burttram decided to give some rewards to the band himself. Since they did so well, he gave the band Monday afternoon practice off and is throwing a Band Bonfire to celebrate all their hard work so far in the season. Needless to say, the Walker Viking Band is extremely satisfied with their performance, results, and awards.
