As the second and only living, Boston Marathon bomber lie recovering in a Massachusetts Hospital from a shootout during his capture the rest of the world watches as the horror unfolds. The blasts just before the finish line on April 15 killed three people and injured more than 260. The brothers then were involved in a shootout at Massachusetts Institution of Technology which resulted in the death of a police officer and the death of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured the next night, Friday April 19, while hiding out in a boat located in someone’s back yard.
The Tsarnaev family is from the Russian republic of Chechnya and fled from there in the 1990s. The two brothers were born in Kyrgyzstan. Dzhokhar became a U.S. citizen in 2012 and Tamerlan was a legal resident.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been described by his Uncle as a “victim of his older brother’s control” and also a “loser”. While other family members express their disapproval and shameful feelings toward what the two brothers did the boy’s parents are in disbelief. Their mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaev has told the press she believes the bombing was fake and the attack was staged, “something like a play.” The father, Anzor Tsarnaev, described his son as a “true angel” and “intelligent”.
Dzhokhar told authorities of plans to detonate other bombs in Times Square. Tsarnaev also told that his brother was the mastermind and that they received no help or motivation from another radical terrorist group. Tsarnaev said the brothers were self-instructed on building bombs via the internet on a page produced by Al Qaeda. Tamerlan supposedly believed that Islamists were under attack and needed to be defended.
Tsarnaev has been charged with using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, as well as one count of malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device resulting in death.
