Tim Pernetti has resigned as Rutgers athletic director, two days after the basketball coach he hired was dismissed for abusive behavior toward student-athletes during practices. These actions have created a buzz in the national media. In the letter of resignation Pernetti had sent to the University of Rutgers, he said he had hoped his tenure at Rutgers would not be judged by the incident. The video was broadcast Tuesday on ESPN. It showed numerous clips of Rice throwing basketballs at players, grabbing them by their jerseys, and yelling many racial slurs. Pernetti said after seeing the video of Rice, pushing and shoving players, that his first instinct was to fire him immediately. However, the University would not allow him to do this.
