On Tuesday, Walker High School’s Viking Band went to Florence, Alabama to compete in a competition called MPA. To find out more about the event, we interviewed Mr. Burttram and received the following information:
MPA is Alabama’s state concert competition. MPA stands for Music Performance Assessment. They performed three songs: a march called “Coat of Arms”, a ballad called “Redemption”, and “a really hard piece” called “Along an English Countryside”. They received all superior ratings from various judges, one including the band director from Ole Miss. They had to cite read some pieces. Cite reading is rather difficult; the process includes receiving a piece of music you’ve never seen before and having eight minutes to perform the piece.
But, that’s not all the band is doing this semester! They’re going to Orlando, Florida in April. They’re staying from the 3rd-7th and be in a parade at Universal Studios.
