This week, Coach Sasser has been teaching his Anatomy students about the skeletal system and all the tendons and ligaments associated with each bone. As part of this learning unit, he implemented technology to enhance the learning experience. The class visited a website titled Edhead.org, which lays out a plan for students to participate in hip and knee replacement surgeries. During the virtual surgery, students acted as the surgeons. They performed a series of preparatory steps such as sterilizing the patient, marking incisions where surgery will begin, and eventually performing the actual procedure with written and oral instructions. Throughout the surgery, Edhead.org presented a series of questions that encouraged concentration and enhanced listening skills. The end of the virtual surgery allowed the student surgeon to suture the incision and check for mobility of the body part that was operated on. Students were amazed at the invasive procedure and took great an interest in the activities.
