Walker High School welcomes many new teachers this 2012-2013 school -year. They include Destiny Vice, Wendy Wilhite, Kellie Cook, and Karen Atkins. We would like to take the time to get to know them a little better and welcome them to Walker High School.
Wendy Wilhite joins the Walker High School teaching staff this year after teaching in Fultondale for six years. As a student, she attended West Point High School and later received a Master’s degree from UAB. She lives in Cullman, AL, has been married for twenty-four years, and has three children. This year Mrs. Wilhite will be teaching Algebra B as well as Grad Exam Remediation. When she is not at school, she enjoys relaxing at home, watching television, and working in her yard. When asked what she likes about teaching, Mrs. Wilhite said she enjoyed hearing the different and creative ways students solve math problems. Mrs. Wilhite is excited about football season and says she will be rooting for Walker in the Walker vs. Cullman game. So far, Mrs. Wilhite loves Walker and says that everyone is very friendly and helpful. As a teacher this year, Mrs. Wilhite would like to get to know everyone better and become part of the Jasper community.
Destiny Vice grew up in Fayette Alabama. After high school, she attended Mississippi State University to earn her degree in Secondary Math. This year she will teach Algebra IA and Algebra IB. She has several hobbies including sports, writing, drawing, and painting. Ms. Vice pointed out that she has already noticed that the teachers at WHS are extremely helpful and friendly. Ms. Vice is looking forward to her upcoming years of being a part of the Walker Viking family.

Mrs. Cook received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Montevallo, a Master’s in Education from the University of West Alabama, and Gifted Certification from the University of Alabama. Mrs. Cook changed her major in college from Medical Technology to Education so she would have more time to spend with her three children. Her hobbies include watching Alabama football, gymnastics, and softball. She also enjoys fishing and spending time with her family. This year Mrs. Cook will be teaching Environmental Science and Earth Science.
Karen Atkins comes to Walker this year with nineteen years of educational experience. Mrs. Atkins graduated from Carbon Hill High School where she participated in athletics such as softball. After high school, she received a degree in education, and then went on to UAB where she studied Educational Leadership. Coach Atkins has held positions from teacher, to coach, to administrator. She was inspired to become a teacher because of the great teachers who made a positive impact on her life. She adds that she feels like teaching was a calling. Mrs. Atkins’s favorite part about WHS is everyone’s friendly and helpful attitudes. At WHS she will be returning to her coaching roots. She enjoys coaching and believes that many lessons can be learned in sports. Coach Atkins is married and has two children. When she is not at school, she enjoys refurbishing old furniture and participating in fitness activities.
