Last week, Mrs. Dutton had a guest come and speak to her class. She has known this person since they were in high school and has edited several of his books. This speaker was Larry Alexander, a hiker and author.
Larry, a former counselor for treatment centers, schools, and prisons, has hiked the Appalachian Trail and all over Europe. He is also the founder of the organization, Challenge Point.
He decided to hike the AT after meeting someone who had already been on the trail. This inspired him to hike the trail as a fundraiser for Challenge Point. One of the stipulations for the fundraiser was that he had to keep a trail journal. These journals evolved into his first two books.
His organization, Challenge Point, does group building exercises with church, community, and corporate groups. His job within Challenge Point is as a Group Dynamics Counselor. In fact, his hike along the AT and subsequent books were done as a fundraiser for Challenge Point.
Recently, Larry’s third book, People 101: Getting an A in Relationships, was released. All money earned by the book goes directly towards Challenge Point. His fourth book about his international travels is being readied for editing.
However, what brought Larry to speak with the class was his upcoming trip to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. During his time on the AT, he gained a group of friends who shared his love of hiking. They all decided to hike the PCT as their last big hike. He will be recording a log of his journey on the Facebook pages for Challenge Point and Through Hiker’s Eyes, the journal for his Appalachian Trail hike.
