Monday, February 13, a special assembly was held in the WHS theater to honor students who recently received scholarships to play athletics at the collegiate level or who were recipients of notable athletic awards. Among the honorees were Weston Griffith, John Michael Knighton, Bradford Lepik, Pollyann Scruggs, Machenzie Williams, Gunter Wisdom, Nic Woodley, and Andrew Harris. Below is a short profile of each of these student athletes and their accomplishments during their high school careers:
Weston Griffith – Weston played Football for 3 Years, and Golf for 6 years. He played on varsity as a 7th grader. He is a member of Beta Club, Key Club and is on A-B Honor Roll. Weston will continue his golf career at Faulkner University.
John Michael Knighton – John Michael has played Baseball for 4 years. He made 2011 All-Area Baseball. He will continue his baseball career at Central Alabama Community College.
Bradford Lepik – Walker has ran Track and Field for 6 years, Cross Country for 5 years, Soccer for 2 years, and Football for 1 year. He is a member of the 2012 T & F 4×400 & 4×800 5A state champion team. He is a 2012 5A state recorder holder in the 4×400. He is the 2011 5A state champion in the 4×800. He made CC All-Sectional in 2009,2010, and 2011. He was a Competitor in AAU Track and Field Nationals in 11th & 12th grades. Bradford has qualified for the state track meet since 7th grade. He has qualified for the state CC meet since 8th grade. He is Co-Captain of the T & F and the CC teams. Bradford will continue CC and T & F at Sewanee-University of the South.
PollyAnn Scruggs– Pollyann has played Volleyball for 4 years, Basketball for 3 years, and Track for 2 years. She made 2011 2nd team All-State, 2011 All-Region, 2009-2010-2011 All-Area team, and 2009-2010-2011 Daily Mountain Eagle Elite. Pollyann will continue her volleyball career at Mississippi College.
Machenzie Williams – Machenzie played Football for 4 years. He will continue his Football career at Faulkner University.
Gunter Wisdom – Gunter played Soccer for 3 years and Football for 3 years. He was ranked 2012 Fifth best kicker in 5A by Maxpreps.com. In 2011 he was Ranked Third best kicker in 5A by Maxpreps.com. He was Ranked 2nd best kicker at football camp. Gunter will continue his Football career at Faulkner University.
Nic Woodley – Nic was named as the Class 5A Region 5 Winner of the Bryant-Jordan Achievement Award. He will continue his career at the University of Alabama.
Andrew Harris – Andrew played Football for one year, Soccer for two years, Cross Country for six years, Track and Field for six years, and Swimming for 2 years. Andrew made All-State Cross Country in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He was the 800m Outdoor Track State champion in 2010 and 2011. He is the 1600m Outdoor Track 3rd place winner in 2010 and second place winner in 2011. He is the 2012 800m Indoor State Champion. Andrew is a member of the 2011 4×800 Outdoor Track State Champion Team. He is a member of the 2012 4×800 & 4×400 Indoor State Champion Team. He is a two Time AAU Junior Olympic National Champion in the 2000m Steeple Chase. Andrew will continue his Track and Field and Cross Country career at the University of Alabama. Other members of the 2012 4×400 & 4×800 5A State Championship Team are Jeb Cowen, Hunter Hawkins and Bradford Lepik, Coached by Mark Aldridge.
