This past week, thirteen Walker Students were accepted to the Walker County Youth Leadership Program. Logan Black, Jeb Cowen, Sarah Elliott, Grayson Griffith, Joseph Harris, Matt Kennedy, Katie Mellott, Andrew Reed, James Reed, Brandon Ruble, Sara Sherer, McKayla Vaughn, and Tori Vines were all accepted into this community oriented program. Through this organization students have the opportunity to learn about leadership, community, and service. Also, they are given the chance to make friends with some of the top students across the county.
Students participate in several team building, educational activities from October to April. They begin with a day at Camp O’rear in which they learn about each other and how the work they do will enhance their community and their own experiences. Later they take a trip to Montgomery to learn about local government and the history beyond our state.
Most importantly, students are taught about local non-profit organizations that benefit our community. The students are taken out in their ‘teams’ to experience the work these non-profits conduct first hand. Students then state a case in order for the non-profit they are representing to receive a grant from the Youth Leadership Team.
We at Walker High School are very proud of these students for being accepted to participate in Walker County Youth Leadership. We are also very happy for them, as this program is both very fun and very educational.
