The Walker High School band is starting their year off right with long, hard practices, along with great confidence in themselves and their fellow members. The band directors consist of head director Curtis Burttram, the drum instructor Jonathan Delouch, along with assistance from the middle school director Don Jones. The 2011-2012 WHS band drum major is the one and only- Dalton Williams.
The Walker band consists of numerous talented members, along with many All-State returners, such as Matt Medders, Eric Kollwitz, Matt Meadows, and Jake Harrison. The band spends a lot of time preparing for their halftime shows and competitions. Along with their school-time practice, the band also practices after school for two hours on Monday and Tuesday, and for two and a half hours on Thursday. Dalton Williams is very impressed with the effort and dedication put forth by the members of the band and is excited to put the show out there to as many audiences as possible.
The Walker High School band theme this year is “Motown”. The show consists of songs by James Brown, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, and many others. There are also many solos throughout the performance. Jake Harrison performs a sax solo, as well as Eric Kollwitz, Jacob Runyan, and Austin Meadows with trumpet solos. “We definitely have a winning show this year, and plan to win many competitions!” says drum major Dalton.
Walker High School students are very confident in their band’s ability to perform, and are always excited to watch them. The Walker band competes in many events throughout their season. September 17th the band will compete in the Night of Bands to show off their routine to all Walker County schools. They also travel to competitions on October 8th and 15th. From drum-line to dance-line, the band is throwing a showdown in Motown!
