Back to school can mean a variety of things. For some there is the anxiousness of a new school and new teachers while others anticipate seeing the return of familiar faces, but either way the 2010-2011 school year is underway. Walker High School has had some minor changes to improve our student body as a whole, one being the addition on a ten minute period known as Academic Opportunity. Even though many students are disappointed about the removal of break the administration views it as more opportunities to succeed and expand the students’ horizons.
With the nerves of transferring from one school to another there is a positive side. Grace Culbreth, a new student from Atlanta Georgia, said, “I look forward to meeting new people. I’ve only mainly met people who attend my church this summer”. Our returning students seem to be all geared up for Football season; both Nate Sparkman and Kathryn Best look forward to an eventful season. Senior, Nate Sparkman also added, he looks forward to being a leader of the school “I look forward to football season and painting up at basketball games. Junior, Josh Hyche, was happy about the first day because he had a chance to catch up with old friends and getting to meet new people He also said, ” I lucked up with my easy classes”. Whether you are looking forward to something specific or not, the first day of school has gone smoothly as students and teachers get into new roles.
Academic Opportunity is a ten minute period after first block for students to catch up on homework or work one on one with a teacher to improve his or her grades. Instead of simply taking attendance the teacher can assist students and help them reevaluate their organization, work, and grades. The removal of break helps teachers get a longer instruction time, as well as a longer lunch period for all students. Despite the fact that the student body may miss their chip and snack break, they have a longer time to eat lunch. There also have been new lunch numbers assigned for a new school year.
The teachers and administration look forward to seeing multiple improvements from our students academically as the year goes on. We wish everyone a successful first day and welcome back!
