Are you interested in becoming more involved at Walker, earn money, and receive college credits? Upward Bound is an organization where students earn money for attending a meeting once a week, can get help with school work, and attend activities. Some of the activities this year included attending the Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery, going to DeSoto Caverns, and watching Grease on Ice. Also, each summer, students have the option of going on a summer trip. In the past, Upward Bound has gone to Chicago, Atlanta, and other
places. This year’s trip will be in Washington D.C.
At the end of each year, all members from each school come together for an awards banquet. This year, out of the eight members at WHS, having a GPA of 3.5 or higher, five qualified to be in the Upward Bound Honor Society: Carly Clifton, Paris Hardie, Brittany Ingram, Brandy Rooffener, and Sabrina Smith. Also, Carly Clifton and Brandy
Rooffener tied for the Spirit of Upward Award. This award was given to a member from each school who attended the most activities, was responsible, and a positive influence for his or her school. Only two schools had two members receive the award; WHS was one of these schools. The Shooting Star award was given to one person out of 90 members. To win this award, the student had to benefit the most from the Upward Bound experience and has grown and matured as a result of participation in Upward Bound. This winner was Walker’s Joseph Kennedy.
In order to be a member of Upward Bound, you must be the first person in your family who plans to enter college, have a 2.5 GPA or higher, be a freshman, sophomore, or junior, be able to provide your family income, and go through the application process and interview. Be sure to listen to the announcements and see Mrs. Dutton for an application in August to apply!
