On Monday and Tuesday, April 26th and 27th, the Walker boys and girls tennis team played in the state championships. Walker boys finished with a sum total of 64 points, which was an astounding 24 points ahead of second place, Muscle Shoals. Walker coach Jay Todd says, “We went with a mission and we undoubtedly accomplished it.”
Christian Matthews who won the title of State Champion and over-all doubles winner said, “I knew we were the best team there and the only way we could possibly lose was for someone else to want it more than we did, and I wasn’t about to let that happen.”
Other title winners were: Matthew Prevost with State Runner-up, Ryan McGehee with State Runner-up, Christian Matthews and Oliver Wright with Doubles State Champions, Ryan McGehee and Matthew Prevost with Doubles State Champions, and Jonathan Gates and Wesley Killingsworth with Doubles State Runners-up.
The Girls team came in second losing by a small margin of four points to St. Paul ’s. Kacey Redmill the State Runner-up said, “We knew St. Paul was the only team that could beat us. They have great players and only losing by four points was a huge accomplishment.” The girl title winners were: Kristen Mosley with Runner-up in singles, Kasey Redmill with Runner-up in singles, Iris Sanders State Champion in singles, Maitlyn Mullen Runner-up in singles, Kelsey Woodman State Champion in singles, and Maitlyn Mullen and Kelsey Woodman State Champions in doubles. Congratulations to all the tennis team members.
