Earlier this year a devastating earthquake struck Haiti and left thousands dead and over 50,000 without homes. The earthquake was reportedly one of the strongest since the 1700’s. With their country still trying to recover the Beta Club of Walker High School decided to do as much as they could to help.
Club sponsor, Kelly Whitaker, decided to focus the club’s efforts on restoring a little piece of comfort into each affected home. Each club member was asked to bring in a blanket to send to Haiti so that the children would have a warm soft bed for rest. Ninety blankets were raised in total. The blankets will be used in their tents and tarps as bedding and makeshift walls. The Beta Club was working alongside Missions Unlimited which is an organization in Jasper created solely to help those in need. With the help of Missions Unlimited, the blankets will be shipped to Haiti in a few weeks.
The Beta Club plans to fit at least one more service project in before the end of the school year and Mrs. Whitaker would like to thank all of the members of Beta Club for their contribution.
