Last weekend, three of Walker’s band members made All-District Band as well as the Alabama All-State Band. The three students are Jake Harrison, Saturynn Dorough, Joey Humphries. Having made All-State as well as All-District, they gain the bragging rights of being able to say they are some of the best musicians in the state.
Saturynn Dorough has been practicing for two months for All-State and All-District and she devotes an hour and a half a day on top of band practice at school. Having made All-State before, she said she has already fulfilled that dream but it is a great feeling to win it again.
Joey Humphries as well as Saturynn plays the trombone and on top of band practice at school, he puts in an hour a day practicing. One day, Joey hopes to play in the Symphonic Band at UAB. Jake Harrison plays the baritone saxophone and has been playing it for about three months. He also practices an hour a day not including band. All three are ecstatic at having accomplished these goals, and have some advice for anyone wanting to do the same.
Here are some nuggets of advice from the band winners:
“Always practice and never stop believing in yourself even if things seem impossible.” – Saturynn Dorough
“Never procrastinate, that is the fastest way to nowhere.” – Joey Humphries
“Play all the time, even when you are tired of it and you want to take a break, don’t stop. That is how you get better.” – Jake Harrison
