The Walker High Competition Cheer Squad returned from the Jamfest Cheer and Dance competition as National Champions! The group competed on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21, in a rigorous two day competion. The team performed their routine twice before the judges and the final award was based on the cumulative scores from both days. Walker finished with a score of 7.9, edging out the second place finisher who had a score of 7.5. The competition had small, medium and large catagories and we competed in the large catagory for squads of 17-20 members. The team won both the super varsity award and the best overall award bringing home two impressive trophies to display at the school. Each team member was also awarded a medallion, a nice champion jacket and a backpack.
The team practices 3-5 days per week perfecting their routine of cheer and dance. Their biggest competition this year came from a Louisiana squad, but there were teams from Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia as well. They qualified for this most recent contest by placing 2nd in the regional competition held in January in Birmingham. This national championship will qualifies the group to attend the world championship in Las Vegas in April, but our group may decline due to cost concerns.
The team is sponsored by Amber Wright. Team members are Simone Dill, Ashten Duncan, Sara Elliott, Allison Farris, Grayson Griffith, Amber Ivory, Rae Johnson, Ashley Kamplain, Heidi Keller, Raven Lake, Mallory Maloy, Gabby Mijares, Molly Morrow, Bria Robinson, Samantha Schultz, Winter Scoles, Hadley Skalnik, Hannah Sparkman, Destynee Spears, and Haley Wolfe.
