Monday February 1st, eighth graders planning on attending Walker High School had an assembly about the expectations of the faculty and a tour of the school, club options, and extra curricular activities. Mr. Crigger, Mrs. Higgins, Mr. Hubbard, and Mr. Alexander each spoke to the upcoming students about Walker.
Mr. Crigger used the anagram E.D.G.E. to motivate the students about the transition to high school. Expand, Discipline, Grades, Enjoy. Students will be in a new school with new opportunities and should expand to get the most out of their high school experience. Students will have to be disciplined to balance all extra activities with their academics. Grades are the most important part of school and students will be expected to do their best to have good grades. Students should enjoy their high school years and get involved in clubs and activities.
Mrs. Higgins explained to the parents and students about the different diplomas offered and the schedule differences in the diploma choices. She also explained that the Four Year Plan is “in pencil” and can be changed. She gave a list of elective choices and credit requirements and substitutions. She stressed the importance of a good GPA and that after freshman year it is difficult to pull up a bad GPA.
Mr. Hubbard and Mr. Alexander focused on the “well rounded athlete” and the requirements of grades and physicals. Mr. Alexander suggested students come to the scheduled free physical night at the high school.
Counselors will go to Maddox on February 3rd to go over Four Year Plans with the eighth graders. Mock schedules will be given in May and registration forms will be mailed in June and need to be returned on July 22nd.
Students seemed to enjoy all the displays of the clubs and extra activities and parents were very interested in getting their children involved in the excellent activities offered at Walker High School.
